Mehlville Board of Education approves the retention of 19 interventionists

The Mehlville Board of Education voted to retain 19 teaching interventionist positions previously funded by a federal grant. At their December 14 meeting, the board also voted to create a PLC (professional learning community)/interventionist director position and to add back the assistant principal positions at each high school that were eliminated in 2011. All three of these positions would start July 1, 2024.
“We are grateful to be able to continue to provide intervention services to our students and to retain 19 interventionists,” said Dr. Jeff Haug, Superintendent of Schools. “With a director overseeing our interventionists and our professional learning communities, we will be positioned to continue to improve the effectiveness of our teaching practices.”
Thirty-four interventionists were hired in 2021 using federal Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) funds. ESSER interventionists were originally hired for three school years, 2021-2022, 2022-2023 and 2023-2024. Without Board of Education action, these positions would sunset in June 2024.
Under the board-approved plan, each elementary and middle school will retain one ESSER interventionist.
An SEL interventionist would be assigned to each middle school using disproportionality funding via Special School District. While SSD would fund this position, these four middle school interventionists would serve all students.
An additional four interventionists will be placed at Bierbaum, Forder and Trautwein elementary schools and at Buerkle Middle School based on school need and Title 1 designation.
